Crystallizes in rare, alkaline-rich magmas (like nepheline syenites) that are low in silica. High concentrations of sodium and iron in the cooling magma chamber allow these long, dark needles to form. The Result: Sharp, jet-black to dark green prismatic crystals that often terminate in a distinct point.
