How it forms: High-pressure 're-cooking' of clay.
Forms in metamorphic rocks, such as mica schists, during the intense collision of tectonic plates. High-pressure regional metamorphism 're-cooks' clay-rich sediments, forcing iron and aluminum into a dense crystal structure. The Result: Hard, dodecahedral crystals that are typically a deep, dark red or brownish color.
