Geology · Formation
How it forms: Iron-rich quartz 'baked' by gamma rays.
Amethyst isn't just 'purple rock'; it is a specific combination of iron and radiation. It forms in hydrothermal veins or volcanic geodes. Silica-rich water seeps into gas bubbles (vesicles) in cooling lava. For it to turn purple, the quartz must contain trace amounts of iron. Over millions of years, natural gamma radiation from the surrounding host rock (from elements like Potassium-40) kicks an electron out of the iron, creating the purple color center.
