Geology · Formation
How it forms: Mineralized fossils over 65M years.
Ammonites are not minerals, but prehistoric marine cephalopods that have been fossilized over millions of years. Roughly 65 to 240 million years ago, these creatures lived in ancient oceans and died on the sea floor. The soft shell was buried in silt and mud; over eons, minerals like Aragonite or Calcite replaced the original organic matter. The Result: A perfectly preserved, spiral-chambered fossil that often shows a beautiful, iridescent 'mother of pearl' finish.
