Geology · Formation
How it forms: Gypsum that lost its water via pressure.
Angelite is the celestial blue variety of Anhydrite, a mineral whose name literally means 'without water.' It originally forms as Gypsum in huge evaporite beds from ancient, drying sea basins. Intense underground pressure and heat 'squeeze' the water molecules out of the gypsum, transforming it into Angelite. The Result: A soft, powdery blue stone with a gentle, waxy luster.
