How it forms: Rapidly cooled 'pebbles' of glass.
Apache Tears are a rounded, translucent variety of the black volcanic glass known as Obsidian. They form during volcanic eruptions when silica-rich lava is extruded and cools rapidly. Small droplets of lava cool much faster than the surrounding mass, preventing the formation of a crystalline structure. The Result: Smooth, pebble-like 'teardrops' that look opaque but are actually dark smoky-grey and translucent when held to the light.
