How it forms: Forms in giant-crystal magma pockets.
Aquamarine is the serene blue variety of Beryl, named for the 'water of the sea.' It forms in 'Pegmatites'—giant-crystal magma pockets—and hydrothermal veins. The inclusion of trace amounts of Iron (Fe2+) into the beryl lattice during formation creates the color. The Result: Clear, hexagonal crystals ranging from pale sky blue to deep sea teal.
