Barite is a heavy, barium-sulfate mineral that often forms beautiful 'roses' in sandy environments. It occurs in many geological environments, notably in sedimentary rocks and as a 'gangue' mineral in ore veins. Barium-rich fluids interact with sulfate in the groundwater, causing the dense mineral to crystallize. The Result: Tabular crystals or 'roses' of thin plates that are surprisingly heavy for their size (Barite is 4.5 times denser than water).
