How it forms: High-heat pegmatite formation.
Beryl is the 'mother mineral' of famous gems like Emerald and Aquamarine, forming in massive crystal pillars. It forms in granite 'Pegmatites'—pockets of magma that cool very slowly, allowing for huge crystals to grow. High concentrations of the rare element Beryllium in the final stages of magmatic cooling trigger the growth. The Result: Large, hexagonal columns that can be several feet long.
