How it forms: Rapidly cooled volcanic lava.
Obsidian is 'volcanic glass'—it is technically not a crystal at all because it lacks an ordered internal structure. It forms during specific volcanic eruptions when 'felsic' (silica-rich) lava is extruded from the Earth. The lava cools so incredibly fast that the atoms do not have time to arrange themselves into a crystalline lattice. The Result: A smooth, black volcanic glass with 'conchoidal' fractures, creating edges sharper than a surgical scalpel.
