It forms in 'clay seams' or sandstone cavities, usually in the Great Artesian Basin of Australia. Silica-rich groundwater trickles down through the earth, depositing millions of sub-microscopic silica spheres in a grid. The Result: A stone with a dark body color (black or grey) that dramatically diffracts light into a spectrum of vibrant colors.
