Also known as Schorl, this is the ultimate 'sink' for the Earth's complex elements. It crystallizes from the final, mineral-heavy 'soup' of a cooling magma chamber, known as a pegmatite. The presence of Boron, a rare element that acts as a structural anchor, allows the tourmaline to absorb complex minerals. The Result: Opaque, jet-black columns that are often vertically striated.
