Chalcopyrite is a copper-iron sulfide that is famous for its 'peacock' iridescent tarnish. It is the most common copper mineral, found in hydrothermal veins and deep-earth volcanic vents. High-heat mineral fluids rich in copper and sulfur crystallize into brassy, golden masses. The Result: While naturally a brassy yellow (like pyrite), when exposed to air, it 'tarnishes' into a brilliant rainbow of blues, purples, and greens.
