How it forms: Aluminum-rich metamorphic rocks.
Dumortierite is a fibrous aluminum borosilicate often found as inclusions within quartz. It forms in aluminum-rich regional metamorphic rocks or high-heat granite pegmatites. The presence of Boron during the high-pressure metamorphism of aluminum sediments triggers the growth. The Result: An opaque, deep-blue or violet stone with a fibrous or massive habit.
