How it forms: Extreme pressure in schist/pegmatites.
Emerald is the most famous variety of Beryl, but its creation requires a 'geological mistake' that rarely happens in nature. It requires Beryllium (found in white, granitic magmas) to meet Chromium (found in deep, black volcanic rocks). Tectonic plates must collide with enough force to 'fold' these distant layers together. Under immense pressure and the presence of hot, silica-rich water, the two elements finally bond. The Result: The Beryllium forms the crystal structure, while the Chromium provides the electric green color.
