Geology · Formation
How it forms: Volcanic activity with high iron content.
Unlike Australian opal, Fire Opal is 'volcanic' and often lacks the rainbow play-of-color, focusing instead on its glowing hue. It forms in the cavities of rhyolitic volcanic rock. High iron content during the precipitation of hydrated silica gives it its signature color. The Result: A translucent to transparent stone in vivid shades of orange, cherry-red, and sun-yellow.
