How it forms: Sand hit by a lightning strike.
Fulgurites are not minerals, but 'impact glasses' created by the raw power of a lightning strike. A lightning bolt (reaching 3,270°F) strikes a sandy or soil-rich area. The extreme heat instantly vaporizes and melts the sand (Silica) along the path of the bolt. The Result: Hollow, glass-lined tubes that perfectly preserve the branching path of the lightning.
