Geology · Formation

How it forms: Contact metamorphism of limestone.

Grossular Garnet is the calcium-rich member of the garnet family, often appearing in 'organic' green or yellow hues. It forms in 'contact metamorphism' zones where magma meets limestone. The reaction between the hot magma’s silica and the limestone’s calcium forces the crystallization. The Result: Hard, dodecahedral crystals in shades of 'Gooseberry' green (hence the name Grossularia).
