How it forms: Radioactive 'cooking' of yellow beryl.
Heliodor is the golden-yellow variety of Beryl, named for the Greek word for 'Sun.' It forms in high-heat granite pegmatites. Natural radiation from the surrounding rocks 'cooks' trace amounts of iron within the beryl crystal lattice. The Result: Transparent, brilliant yellow to honey-gold hexagonal columns.
