Hematite is the primary ore of iron and the mineral responsible for the 'red' in the Red Planet (Mars). It forms in standing water or hot springs via the precipitation of iron from mineral fluids. Iron and Oxygen bond in the presence of water to form the crystals. The Result: Heavy, metallic silver stones that leave a bright 'blood-red' streak if rubbed against a rough surface.
