Geology · Formation
How it forms: Oxidation of zinc ore bodies.
Hemimorphite is a unique zinc silicate mineral whose name refers to its 'half-shaped' crystals. It forms in the oxidation zones of zinc ore deposits, often near Smithsonite. The weathering of primary zinc ores (like Sphalerite) in a silica-rich environment creates the crystals. The Result: Electric-blue botryoidal (grape-like) crusts or clear, blade-like crystals.
