Iolite is a magnesium aluminum silicate whose name means 'Violet Stone' in Greek. It forms in regional metamorphic environments, particularly in clay-rich schists. Moderate-to-high pressure metamorphism of magnesium-heavy sediments creates the violet-blue crystals.
