Kyanite is an aluminum silicate that grows in spectacular 'blade-like' fans. It forms in regional metamorphic environments, such as mica schists. Aluminum-rich sediments are 'baked' and 'squeezed' during the collision of continental plates. The Result: Long, flat, blade-like crystals in blue, green, black, or orange.
