Geology · Formation

How it forms: Contact metamorphism of limestone.

Lapis is a rock formed in a 'metamorphic oven.' It is created through 'contact metamorphism,' where hot magma intrudes into limestone or marble. The heat and chemical exchange turn the white limestone into a complex blue cocktail dominated by Lazurite. The Result: A rich, royal blue stone often containing white Calcite and golden Pyrite.
