About this stone
Formed from rapidly cooling lava, Obsidian is a powerful protective and cleansing stone. It draws out mental stress and emotional blockages, acts as a mirror for the soul, and reveals hidden truths for deep healing.
Geology · Formation
How it forms: Rapid cooling; no crystal structure.
Obsidian is nature's glass—it has no crystal structure because it cooled too fast for atoms to organize. It forms during volcanic eruptions when silica-rich lava is extruded and meets the air. Extreme cooling rates 'freeze' the atoms in a chaotic, liquid-like state. The Result: A smooth, black volcanic glass that breaks with razor-sharp 'conchoidal' fractures.
