Geology · Formation
How it forms: Micro-spheres that diffract light.
Opal is a 'mineraloid' that diffracts light through a sea of microscopic spheres. It forms in ancient sedimentary rock cracks or volcanic cavities. Silica-rich water seeps into the Earth, depositing tiny silica spheres in a highly ordered grid. The Result: A stone that displays 'play-of-color'—a rainbow effect caused by light bouncing between the spheres.
