Geology · Formation
How it forms: Formed in rhyolitic volcanic ash.
Oregon Opal is a unique volcanic variety found in the high desert rhyolite beds. It forms in the cavities of volcanic ash and rhyolite where silica-saturated water deposited in volcanic geyser basins or ash deposits crystallizes. The Result: A transparent-to-translucent opal ranging from clear to orange-red 'Fire' hues.
