Geology · Formation
How it forms: 400M year old marine mineralization.
Orthoceras is the fossilized remain of an ancient, squid-like creature that lived 400 million years ago. These marine cephalopods died in the shallow oceans of the Devonian period. The soft shell was buried in oxygen-poor marine sediment; over eons, minerals replaced the organic matter. The Result: A polished black stone containing the white, arrow-shaped 'cone' of the ancient creature.
