Geology · Formation
How it forms: Oxygen-depleted marine sediments.
Pyrite (Iron Disulfide) is the 'Fool's Gold' that forms in the Earth's hidden, oxygen-poor corners. It forms in oxygen-poor environments like deep-sea sediments. In stagnant water, bacteria consume organic matter and release hydrogen sulfide, which reacts with dissolved iron. The Result: Metallic, golden isometric (cubic) crystals with faces so smooth they look man-made.
