Ruby is the 'King of Gems'—the red variety of Corundum, second in hardness only to diamond. It forms in high-heat and high-pressure metamorphic rocks like marble or basalt. The inclusion of trace amounts of Chromium into the aluminum-oxide structure creates the blood-red color.
