How it forms: Massive evaporation of ancient seas.
Selenite is a crystalline variety of Gypsum that forms through a process of extreme evaporation. It forms in 'evaporite' basins—ancient, shallow seas or salt lakes that have been cut off from the ocean. As the water evaporates under intense sun, mineral concentration increases until translucent, pearly white crystals precipitate out.
