Geology · Formation

How it forms: Hydration of Earth's mantle rocks.

Serpentine is a group of minerals formed from the transformation of the Earth's mantle. It forms when ultramafic rocks from the mantle are pushed toward the surface and meet water. A process called 'serpentinization' hydrates the rock, changing its chemistry and texture into a waxy, green-to-yellow stone that features mottled patterns.
