How it forms: Natural radiation bruising the lattice.
Smoky Quartz is a clear quartz that has undergone a natural 'x-ray.' It forms in the same environments as clear quartz, but usually in proximity to radioactive elements like Uranium or Thorium. Natural gamma radiation 'bruises' the crystal lattice, specifically interacting with trace amounts of Aluminum. The Result: Pale translucent grey to jet-black colors.
