How it forms: Pegmatites and metamorphic schists.
Spessartine is the vibrant orange-to-red variety of the garnet family. It forms in granite pegmatites and manganese-rich metamorphic rocks. A high concentration of Manganese and Aluminum during slow magmatic cooling results in brilliant, transparent 'Mandarin' orange crystals.
