How it forms: Evaporation of water in arid deserts.
Turquoise is a hydrous phosphate of copper and aluminum that only forms in dry climates. It is a secondary mineral found in the 'oxidation zone' of aluminum-rich rocks. Slightly acidic rainwater percolates through the soil and reacts with phosphorus, copper, and aluminum. As it evaporates in desert heat, it leaves behind turquoise in rock veins.
