About this stone
One of the oldest healing stones, Agate promotes inner stability, composure, and maturity. Its banded patterns represent layers of strength, making it a grounding stone for centering the physical and emotional body.
Geology · Formation
How it forms: Rhythmic deposition in rock voids.
Agate is a variety of Chalcedony that 'paints' itself inside the hollow voids of ancient lava. It begins in a 'gas bubble' (vesicle) left behind as prehistoric lava cooled. Silica-rich groundwater seeps into these hollow holes. Year after year, the silica precipitates out of the water, building up microscopic layers on the walls. Slight changes in the water’s mineral content (iron, manganese, nickel) change the color of the layers, creating the iconic rhythmic bands.
