Chalcedony
What it is
Microcrystalline quartz — the same SiO₂ formula, but with crystals too small to see individually. This gives chalcedony its waxy luster and translucent glow instead of quartz's glassy transparency. Agates, jaspers, and carnelian are all chalcedony varieties.
How it forms
Forms when silica-rich groundwater slowly deposits microscopic quartz crystals in cavities, cracks, and volcanic gas bubbles. The banded patterns in agates come from rhythmic deposition — each band represents a change in the water's chemistry.
