Geology · Formation
How it forms: Rare green chalcedony via nickel.
Chrysoprase is the rarest and most valuable variety of chalcedony, prized for its bright, 'apple-green' glow. It forms in the weathered caps of nickel-rich rocks, particularly in arid or tropical climates. Unlike Emerald, which gets its green from chromium, Chrysoprase is colored by trace amounts of Nickel silicate. The Result: A translucent, waxy stone that looks almost edible, resembling green grapes or bright apples.
