Geology · Formation

How it forms: Light interference from iron layers.

Fire Agate is a variety of chalcedony that uses a 'trick of light' to create its internal fire. It forms in volcanic cavities from layers of silica and iron oxide. Extremely thin, alternating layers of iron oxide (limonite) interfere with light waves as they pass through. The Result: A shimmering 'Schiller' effect of iridescent reds, golds, and greens trapped inside a brown stone.
