Geology · Formation
How it forms: Chalcedony colored by hematite.
Carnelian is a vibrant variety of Chalcedony that owes its color to the 'rust' of the earth. It forms in volcanic environments where silica-rich groundwater deposits layers in cavities. The inclusion of iron oxide (hematite) during the formation process 'stains' the translucent quartz. The Result: A spectrum of orange, red, and brownish hues.
