Onyx is a variety of chalcedony known for its perfectly parallel, alternating bands of color. It forms in the cavities of volcanic rocks or sedimentary basins. Slow, rhythmic deposition of silica layers from mineral-rich groundwater builds the bands. The Result: A dense, banded stone with smooth, straight lines.
