How it forms: High-pressure decay of ancient trees.
Jet is not a mineral, but a type of fossilized wood that has been transformed over millions of years. Ancient trees die and are buried in deep, oxygen-poor marine mud. Extreme pressure over 180 million years compresses the wood into a dense, black 'coal-like' material. The Result: An opaque, lightweight black organic gem that is warm to the touch.
