Organic
What it is
Jet is a mineraloid formed from ancient wood that was subjected to extreme pressure. Essentially fossilized driftwood, jet is a form of lignite coal that can be carved and polished to a brilliant black sheen. It was enormously popular in Victorian mourning jewelry.
How it forms
Begins as waterlogged driftwood buried in marine mud. Over millions of years, pressure and chemical changes transform the wood into a dense, black, carbon-rich material that retains the original wood grain structure.
Carbon + hydrocarbons (lignite coal variant)
