Geology · Formation

How it forms: Alteration of magnesium-rich rocks.

Magnesite is a magnesium carbonate mineral that is often mistaken for Howlite. It forms through the alteration of magnesium-rich rocks (like Serpentinite) by carbonated water. Magnesium-heavy fluids crystallize into massive, white-to-grey nodules. The Result: A soft, white stone with a dull luster, often featuring dark grey or black veins.
