Carbonate
What it is
Minerals built around the carbonate ion (CO₃). This family includes malachite (green copper carbonate), azurite (blue copper carbonate), rhodochrosite (pink manganese carbonate), and smithsonite (zinc carbonate). The metal cation determines the color.
How it forms
Most carbonates form in the oxidation zone of metal ore deposits, where carbonate-rich groundwater reacts with metal-bearing minerals near the surface. Malachite and azurite often occur together as copper ore weathers.
