How it forms: Oxidation of copper ore bodies.
Malachite is a 'secondary mineral' that only exists because other copper minerals were destroyed first. It primarily forms in hydrothermal veins of copper mines. Carbonated water reacts with copper ore and drips through mine ceilings, building up in concentric, rhythmic layers. The Result: The iconic 'bacon-strip' or 'bullseye' pattern.
