Smithsonite is a zinc carbonate named after James Smithson, the founder of the Smithsonian Institution. It is a secondary mineral that forms in the oxidation zone of zinc ore deposits. Carbonated rainwater reacts with primary zinc minerals in limestone environments, resulting in a waxy, 'bubbly' (botryoidal) stone in pastel shades of blue, green, or pink.
