Geology · Formation
How it forms: Fossilized microscopic sea creatures.
Mookaite is a colorful Australian jasper that is actually a 'Radiolarite'—a stone made of microscopic fossils. It forms in the Mooka Creek area of Western Australia. Billions of microscopic sea creatures (Radiolaria) died and were buried; their silica shells were then fossilized into stone. The Result: A dense, smooth stone in vivid Earth tones: burgundy, mustard yellow, and cream.
