What it is
Opaque, fine-grained quartz mixed with other minerals and impurities. What distinguishes jasper from chalcedony is its opacity — jasper is completely opaque due to higher concentrations of iron oxides, clay, and organic material. The patterns (ocean, dalmatian, mookaite) come from specific geological conditions.
How it forms
Forms when silica-rich fluids fill cavities and fractures, incorporating surrounding minerals. Ocean jasper forms in volcanic coastal rock. Dalmatian jasper gets its spots from tourmaline or iron oxide inclusions.
