Geology · Formation

How it forms: Volcanic ash + marine mud + calcite.

Septarian is a 'concretion'—a geological mystery that forms from the inside out. It began 50 to 70 million years ago when volcanic eruptions killed marine life that settled into the mud. As organic matter decayed, mud balls formed. When the ocean receded, these mud balls dried and cracked. Calcite from decomposed shells seeped into the cracks. The Result: A gray limestone exterior, yellow calcite centers, and dark brown aragonite dividers.
